NYSC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
We’ll show you the following NYSC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) most serving and prospective corpers ask.
We realise that there are lots of stories and epistles of personal experiences on NYSC on the internet. But not much that offers serious solutions and answers to frequently asked questions on the National scheme.
NYSC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
We have also been asked some of these question by some serving and prospective corps members online. This is why we have collated some of these NYSC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and made authentic research as to the answers. So here goes…
Can I leave NYSC Orientation Camp? If yes, under what circumstances?
It is very rare for a Corps member to be granted an exeat card to leave the NYSC orientation camp. However where the circumstances so require an exeat may be granted. For example; law graduates may be given an exeat pass to attend their Call to bar ceremony.
If I fall ill in Camp what happens to me?
The orientation camps have clinics and drug dispensaries that attend to Corps members who fall ill or are injured during the camp period. More serious cases may be taken out of the camp to the nearest hospitals.
How can I withdraw money in Camp if I run out of funds?
Some orientation camps have ATM’s (for example Abuja), However for the camps that don’t have ATMs, a special exeat may be granted to go into town to withdraw money. This rarely happens though, so it’s better to go into camp fully prepared with enough funds. Also have at the back of your mind that some allowances will be paid to you during the course of the camp. NB:Sometimes, all you need to do is to be ‘Nigerian’ about it and you will be allowed to go out to withdraw. I know you understand what I mean.If you don’t; you can simply ask.
Are Corp Members fed in Camp? Do I need to eat camp food?
Yes. The NYSC orientation camp provides 3 square meals for all corps members prepared by cooks and assisted by Corps members whose platoon are on kitchen duty. Many Corp members may however prefer to eat in the camp’s mammy market for variety. There is however a meal card which Corp members are expected to tick at every meal. It’s funny that some people who really like eating had more than one meal card, so they ate as many times as possible. Some corpers can do anything for food.
I have heard of Corps members’ service year being extended by a period of time. What is the cause and how can I avoid it?
Certain offences may warrant a Corp member’s service year by a few months. Being absent at the monthly clearance exercise and other offences can result in your service year being extended. Note that you will not be paid any allowance during this period since the scheme is not responsible for your service extension. This is usually not a good experience, so try and keep to the instructions given by your inspectors.
What happens if I lose my Discharge Certificates or it gets destroyed? Can I be issued another one?
The NYSC has a policy of non-reissuance. This means that if you lose your Discharge Certificate or it gets destroyed all the NYSC will do is issue you a letter of confirmation confirming to who it may concern that indeed you served. Is this fair enough? What do you think?
Why is the date on the Discharge Certificate different from the date of passing out?
I know most people don’t use to notice this. The reason is that NYSC is supposed to last for a year but the POP usually take place 2-3 weeks before it clocks a year. The idea is that within the 2-3 weeks after POP, corps members are assumed to be on leave.
How can I correct an error on my discharge certificate?
All you need to do is to report the error you noticed to any NYSC staff, who will direct you to the office where you will find some people who will help you correct the error. This also depends on the nature of the error. Most of the errors can be easily corrected in the State where you served if you have not laminated your certificate before the error was noticed by you. If laminated before the error was noticed, you will have to wait for another certificate to be sent from Abuja (Nysc Headquarters) as such error requires that a new certificate be made for you.
NB: Don’t laminate your discharge certificate immediately you get it, at least get home (I mean your State) first!
Can I suspend my service year to undertake another project (say travel abroad) and finish it up later?
Yes, any/everything is possible; after all, some foreign corpers serve after they might have concluded their second/postgraduate degree. You just need to inform NYSC and your institution about your intention so that they can help you get what you want. You really need to inform them so that when you are back and ready, you will not be denied the opportunity.
How can I be posted to the State Capital for my Primary Assignment?
To answer this, I would say: be active in camp! Be very active and not passive in the various activities in camp. Even if you choose to be active in only one thing, just be among the best people who can do that and you will be on your way to the city. Though some people prefer being ‘nigerian’ about it, by meeting some important personalities or probably working their way through it using different means.
Can I defer my NYSC mobilisation to another year?
Yes. You just need to inform your institution and NYSC.
How can I get a place to stay immediately after orientation camp?
This is quite simple. All you need to do is to identify with any camp fellowship in the camp if your PPA doesn’t have a place for you immediately. I am sure of NCCF, the family house is always available for as many corps members as possible who desire to associate with them. I think other Corpers’ fellowships do the same.
